New Moon in Gemini

  • A new moon signals a time for new beginnings, embarking on new ventures, or simply altering the course of our lives in some way. While full moons represent a time of release and closure when we purge what no longer serves our highest good, new moons push us to project all our hopes, wishes, and desires outward into the universe.

  • Remember that the moon in astrology represents our inner world through emotions, instincts, feelings, intuition, and core needs.

  • Gemini is a mutable air sign that’s ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, the mind, and intellect. When the moon is positioned here, the mind could feel more active than usual and we might have a deeper need for both intellectual and social stimulation.

  • It’s also noteworthy that this Gemini new moon takes place during Gemini season, which may have already gotten us thinking and visualizing how we want the next chapter of our lives to look like.

  • This new moon urges us to challenge stagnancy both in ourselves and on a societal level. Gemini is inquisitive, knowledgeable, and perceptive, making this an excellent time to write all our ideas down and explore new possibilities without limiting ourselves. I recently read this quote by the late Irish poet Oscar Wilde: “To define is to limit,” and I think it is more relevant now than ever.

  • Now is an ideal time to manifest any desired life changes, big or small. This could mean changing up our daily routines, relocating to another city or country, changing career paths, learning a new language or skill, speaking up about issues you were afraid of discussing in the past (remember, Gemini is a communicative sign that loves to get information out there), or anything you feel called to do that you might have felt apprehensive about. NOW is the time!

Venus Cazimi:

  • The Venus Cazimi took place on June 4th.

  • In astrology, a Cazimi occurs when a planet comes within one degree of the sun. In this case, that planet is Venus, the planet of love, romantic relationships, artistry, and beauty.

  •  When Venus is in such proximity to the Sun, we are more inclined to receive blessings in the area of partnerships, romance, and creative endeavors. We may even feel more uplifted and inspired during this period.

  • Although it already passed, its occurrence just two days before the new moon in Gemini shouldn’t be overlooked, because Cazimis represent new beginnings the same way the new moon does!

  • The word Cazimi is a Latinized version of the phrase, “in the heart of the sun” in Arabic (Kasmimi.)

Astrology concept of the week: What are aspects in astrology?

  • Aspects are the angles formed between two planets or between a planet and a significant point (like the Ascendant or Midheaven) in a natal chart. They show us how the energies of different planets and/or celestial bodies interact with each other in the birth chart and how they can influence an individual's personality and approach to life.

  •  Aspects can also be found in synastry (compatibility) charts between two individuals and similarly explain how the two people interact with and view each other on an interpersonal level.

  • There are FIVE main aspects in astrology: conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions. Their names are based on the degree distance between the planets/celestial bodies. For example, conjunctions involve two planets/celestial bodies that are 0 degrees from each other, while oppositions involve planets/celestial bodies separated by a distance of approx. 180 degrees.

  • Aspects in astrology are typically labelled as “harmonious” or “harsh.” Sextiles and trines are regarded as harmonious, squares and oppositions are seen as harsh, and conjunctions can go either way depending on which planets/celestial bodies are involved.

  • Harmonious aspects indicate that the energies of the two planets/celestial bodies work well together and complement each other, whereas harsh aspects tend to show discord and tension between the planetary energies in question.

  • Example of a harmonious aspect: Ascendant sextile Venus. This aspect creates harmony between the ascendant (rising sign) and Venus. Remember that the ascendant is the image that we project to others and how are are perceived by others, so having Venus sextile here would make someone be seen as pleasant to be around, physically beautiful, and overall someone who puts others at ease when in their company.

  • Example of a harsh aspect: Sun square Saturn. In astrology, the sun represents our ego, identity, desires, and actions. Saturn is a very karmic planet that is meant to teach us important life lessons, but on the negative side, is also can impose limitations and feel restrictive when aspecting a planet/celestial body. People with this aspect may feel stunted in life because the influence of Saturn makes them apprehensive and doubtful of their capabilities.

  • TRIGGER WARNING For anyone who would like to learn more about the connection between astrology and trauma, I recommend the book Chiron by Martin Lass. Chiron is an asteroid known as the “wounded healer,” and its placement in our birth chart shows where we could have deep emotional wounds.
