YST Updates:

Major astrological events:

  • Mars is stationed in Cancer from Sept. 4th-Nov. 3rd.

  • Mercury enters Virgo on Sept. 8th

Mars in Cancer-"When Mars swims in the waters of Cancer, it’s the tides of emotion that propel forward."

  • Mars in Cancer is regarded as a challenging placement for someone to have in their natal chart because Mars is in its fall in Cancer.

  • Essential dignities in astrology state that every planet and luminary (sun & moon are luminaries) can either be in domicile, exalted, in detriment, or in fall depending on which zodiac sign it’s placed in. When a planet is in domicile, it is in its “home” sign, which means it feels comfortable with the energy of that zodiac sign, and it does well there. Exaltation means a planet is “looking up” and has peak awareness. In other words, it is more spiritually inclined and operates intuitively with ease. Planets in detriment have a more difficult time because the energy they’re dealing with feels strange and unfamiliar because it is often opposite from its home sign (eg. the Sun is in domicile in Leo and in detriment in Aquarius, its opposite sign.) A planet is most challenged when it’s in its fall, because its capabilities are weakened and it has a lot of trouble navigating the energies and themes of the sign that it’s placed in.

A chart of Essential Dignities in astrology (Rulership=in domicile)

  • Cancer is a difficult sign for Mars to be in because the planet Mars represents action, aggression, assertion, and how we respond when challenged. It is also associated with speed, confrontation, violence, and war. The sign of Cancer deals with themes that are staggeringly different from those of Mars: Nurturance, protecting others, caretaking, motherhood, sensitivity, emotions, and intuition.

  • Mars is more comfortable when placed in signs that are more outward with their energy and intentions (such as Aries.) When confronted with conflict or pushed to act, Cancer tends to turn to its emotional world and prefers to consult with its innermost thoughts and feelings before reacting or taking action. For this reason, people with their Mars in Cancer often get labeled as evasive and passive aggressive.

  • On a collective level, we may feel more inclined to turn to our emotions and intuition rather than logic during the Mars in Cancer period. This could also bring a desire for security and safety instead of risk taking. It’s also important to channel that protective Cancerian energy to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our inner peace during these chaotic times.

Mercury is in Virgo from September 8th-26th (but this time it’s NOT in Retrograde!)

  • I’m more than sure that almost all of us are beyond thrilled that the hellscape of last month’s Mercury in retrograde is done with! It was particularly challenging because during part of that retrograde Mercury was stationed in Virgo, a sign that has an especially difficult time with Mercury retrogrades, being that Mercury is its ruling planet.

  • On September 8th, Mercury will re-enter the sign of Virgo, but this time Mercury is direct! Whew! This time, things should feel more focused and aligned and we could find ourselves less distracted and frazzled and more decisive and in tune with what’s really going to benefit us long-term (Virgo loves to sort and categorize things, and is a master at knowing what to prioritize and when.)

  • This could also be a key time to evaluate the experiences we had during the Mercury retrograde in order to gain clarity.

  • If you have a business or are launching one, this is an excellent time for you to get your message out there and communicate with potential/existing clients. Same goes for those involved in activism and/or community organizing-communicative abilities will be enhanced because Mercury is direct in its domicile sign, making this the moment to get your message and information out there.

Astrology concept of the week: What is the degree theory?

Degrees in a birth chart

  • When reading a birth chart, you typically see the planet, the sign it’s in, and then a numerical degree. Many people don’t pay much attention to the degrees despite that they actually mean something pretty important! That’s where the degree theory in astrology comes in. It was invented by the late Serbian Astrologer Nikola Stojanovic and states that the number of a degree is linked to a specific zodiac sign, and therefore lends some of that sign’s traits.

  • 1° - Aries / Mars: Action, aggression, taking initiative, leadership, business, wars, violence, conflict, the idea of being “first”, the self.

  • 2° - Taurus / Venus: Materialism, stability, finances, wealth, forest, trees, food, luxuries, voice, singing, earth.

  • 3° Gemini / Mercury: two of something, siblings, hands, double, local, small town, neighborhood, groups, communication, the mind, learning.

  • 4° Cancer / Moon: mother, home, public, nurturance, intuition, protecting others, family, ancestry/roots.

  • 5° Leo / Sun: strong, royal, leader, outdoors, outgoing, creativity, performing arts, risk vs. pleasure, hair, ego, children.

  • 6° Virgo / Mercury: health, sickness/illness, work, routine, pets, hospitals, doctors, the idea of sorting/categorizing, refining things, perfectionism, manual service.

  • 7° Libra / Venus: beauty, luxury items, earrings/jewelry, fashion, couples, music, art, marriage, justice, associates, legalities, courtrooms, balance, justice, fairness.

  • 8° Scorpio / Pluto+Mars: secrets, death, sex, insurance, taxes, jealousy, pregnancy/womb, other people’s resources, depth, intensity.

  • 9° Sagittarius / Jupiter: Higher education, borders, professors, foreign, travel, archery, having a plan.

  • 10° Capricorn / Saturn: The government, authority figures, public-facing, slow, delay, karma, lessons, shadow side, depression.

  • 11° Aquarius / Uranus: Unexpected events, randomness, high places, flying, airports, high tech, helping others, altruism, communities, friends, networks, organizations, electricity.

  • 12° Pisces / Neptune: swimming, bodies of water, disguises, illusions, missing, rain, flood, out of focus, spirituality, confusion, misplaced, unclear, “foggy”.

  • Once the degrees pass the number 12, they start the cycle all over again, for instance:

13° Aries:

14° Taurus

15° Gemini

16° Cancer

17° Leo:

18° Virgo

19° Libra

20° Scorpio

21° Sagittarius

22° Capciron

23° Aquarius

24° Pisces

25° Aries

26° Taurus

27° Gemini

28° Cancer

29° Leo

  • 0° can also be found in birth charts (I have my Jupiter in Scorpio at 0°!) and it’s basically interpreted as very neutral, “clean slate” energy, but could also indicate a lack of direction or clear idea as to how to go about the themes associated with that planet, because it’s all left up to the native who has that planet in 0°.

  • 29° is a major one to look out for in a birth chart. This is known as an “anaretic” degree, which comes from the Greek word for destructive (anaretikos.) It is regarded as the fated degree, and it is the last degree before moving into a new zodiac sign (each sign spans 30 degrees total.) It is challenging to have planets at 29° because the person takes on the karma of that zodiac sign and all of its experiences and must learn from these crises to start anew.
